Short answer: On OpenAI's own pages, ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month and adds higher model limits, advanced reasoning, bigger memory and storage, more image, voice and upload capacity, Codex and the Work agent, and it removes ads. Free keeps unlimited everyday text chats but limits everything around them. OpenAI does not publish a message count for either plan, so the "160 messages every 3 hours" figure you will see on blogs is unofficial. Below: a side-by-side table, what is and isn't published, the ad-free catch, and a decision guide. Short answer: ChatGPT Projects work on the free plan. OpenAI's help article says you can create an unlimited number of projects, but a free project holds up to 5 files (Go and Plus get 25, Pro and the business plans 40). A project keeps related chats, files and instructions together so you stop re-explaining your background. To start: select New project in the sidebar, name it, add files and instructions, then chat inside it. Short answer: there is no single best free AI chatbot, because the three big free plans limit different things. ChatGPT's free plan offers unlimited everyday text chats but caps uploads, images, voice and research. Claude's free plan runs on a usage budget that resets on a rolling five-hour window, with no published message count. Gemini's free plan has "standard limits" that refresh every 5 hours up to a weekly limit. I checked each company's own pages on October 12, 2026. Short answer: no, ChatGPT dots are not part of the free plan. OpenAI's help center says dots are included in Pro and Business Premium, with a beta for Enterprise workspaces where an admin turns it on, and its pricing page lists dots only on the Pro plan card. Free, Go and Plus aren't on that list. I read OpenAI's own pages on October 12, 2026. Short answer: On OpenAI's own pages, the free ChatGPT plan has unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse guardrails. What is capped is everything around the chat: file uploads, image creation, voice, deep research, memory and context size, Codex and ChatGPT Work. The old "10 messages every 5 hours" figure that many blogs repeat is not on OpenAI's current pages. Below: what is unlimited, what is limited, how to check, and how the free plan compares with Claude and Gemini. CHATGPT / FREE PLAN What is capped? Short answer: Claude Projects are available on the free plan, up to five projects per account. A project is a workspace with its own instructions, its own uploaded files and its own chats, so Claude stops asking you the same background questions. To start: open Projects, choose "+ New Project," set project instructions, add files, then chat inside it. Projects draw from your normal usage, so they save effort, not quota.
