ChatGPT Free vs Plus (2026): What the $20 Actually Adds

Short answer: On OpenAI's own pages, ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month and adds higher model limits, advanced reasoning, bigger memory and storage, more image, voice and upload capacity, Codex and the Work agent, and it removes ads. Free keeps unlimited everyday text chats but limits everything around them. OpenAI does not publish a message count for either plan, so the "160 messages every 3 hours" figure you will see on blogs is unofficial. Below: a side-by-side table, what is and isn't published, the ad-free catch, and a decision guide.

This table uses only what OpenAI's pricing page and help articles say. I read them on October 19, 2026. Where OpenAI gives no number, the table says so instead of guessing.

The message counts OpenAI doesn't publish

Search for Plus limits and several comparison posts say Plus allows about 160 messages every 3 hours, with a separate weekly cap on manual use of the Thinking model, and that Free is about 10 messages every 5 hours. I couldn't find any of those numbers on OpenAI's current pages:

  • The Plus help article says Plus "may include usage limits such as message caps, especially during high demand," and that "these limits may vary based on system conditions." No number.
  • It also says model availability changes during rollouts and tells you to use the model picker for what your account has.
  • The Free Tier FAQ describes unlimited everyday text chats, and our ChatGPT free plan limits post covers why the old 10-per-5-hours figure is dated.

Those third-party numbers may have been accurate for an earlier model. Treat them as history, not as a promise. The useful question is not "how many messages" but "do I hit a wall on Free, and which wall."

Ads, and the "ad-free Free" option

This is the part most Free vs Plus posts skip. OpenAI's Ads in ChatGPT article says:

  • Ads may appear for people on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts will not have ads.
  • Ads are being rolled out to eligible users in select regions, so you may not see any.
  • If you are on Free and don't want ads, you can switch to an Ads-Free experience in Settings. It removes ads but comes with lower usage limits and reduced feature access, for example fewer messages and no access to some tools such as image generation or deep research. You can switch back from the rate-limit banner or Settings.
  • To get no ads without those lower limits, the article points to Plus or Pro.

So "no ads" on Free is a trade, not a free lunch. If ads are the main thing bothering you, you have two real options: accept the lower Free limits, or pay for Plus.

Price and the free-month offer

  • $20/month is the price on OpenAI's Plus help article, billed monthly. The same article says there is no annual billing for Plus.
  • India view: the pricing page showed ₹1,999 a month for Plus, and ₹399 a month (including GST) for Go.
  • Free first month: when I opened the pricing page in my account, Plus was marked "Limited time" at ₹0 for one month, with the note that from November 19, 2026 it continues at ₹1,999 a month and can be cancelled anytime. Offers like this depend on your account and region, so check the price you see before you confirm anything.

API usage is not included in Plus and is billed separately, according to the same help article.

Which plan fits you

This is a decision guide built from the table above, not a recommendation to buy. Your own workload decides.

What to check in your own account

  1. Open the model picker. OpenAI says to use it to see which models your plan has right now.
  2. Open the pricing view in ChatGPT and read the price in your currency, plus any promo terms, before upgrading.
  3. If you're on Free and see ads, look for Ads controls in Settings to see whether the Ads-Free option exists for your region.
  4. If you hit a limit, ChatGPT shows a banner; per OpenAI, upgrading from Free resets the rate limit you hit.
