Claude Projects on the Free Plan: How to Use Them
Short answer: Claude Projects are available on the free plan, up to five projects per account. A project is a workspace with its own instructions, its own uploaded files and its own chats, so Claude stops asking you the same background questions. To start: open Projects, choose "+ New Project," set project instructions, add files, then chat inside it. Projects draw from your normal usage, so they save effort, not quota.
What a project is (and isn't)
Anthropic describes projects as separate workspaces, each with its own chat history and knowledge base. Two parts matter:
- Project instructions tell Claude how to respond. Claude uses them in every chat inside the project.
- Project knowledge is the documents, text and code you upload as background for those chats.
The catch most guides skip: per Anthropic's help article, context is not shared across chats within a project unless it is in the project knowledge. If Claude learned something in one chat, add it to the knowledge or instructions, or the next chat won't have it.
Free vs paid: what you get
| Feature | Free | Pro / Max / Team / Enterprise |
|---|---|---|
| Projects available | Yes | Yes |
| Number of projects | Up to 5 | Anthropic's article states the cap only for Free |
| Project instructions and knowledge | Yes | Yes |
| Retrieval mode for large knowledge | No | Yes: switches on near the context limit, up to 10x capacity |
| Sharing with other people | No | Team and Enterprise only |
Checked on October 11, 2026 against Anthropic's What are projects? and How can I create and manage projects? articles, and the pricing page, which also lists up to 5 projects for Free.
Anthropic's pages don't give a file size limit, a file count limit or a token capacity for project knowledge, so I can't give you a number. Some blogs do; none that I read cite Anthropic for it.
Set one up in five steps
- Open Projects. Select Projects on the left side of your account, or go to claude.ai/projects.
- Create it. Select "+ New Project" in the upper right, then enter a name and description. Anthropic says Claude cannot see the name and description, so they're just labels for you.
- Set instructions. Click "Set project instructions," write them, and click "Save instructions."
- Add knowledge. Click the "+" button on the right of the project page and upload documents, text files or code snippets.
- Start chatting inside the project. Or move an existing chat in: open the dropdown next to the chat name and choose "Add to project."
Free accounts can have five projects, so name them by job (for example, "Weekly report") rather than by topic.
Three instruction templates to adapt
These are my suggestions to adapt, not Anthropic's templates. I haven't tested them across different tasks, so treat them as a starting point and refine after a few chats.
| Project job | Instruction to start from | Files to upload |
|---|---|---|
| Writing in your voice | "Write in a warm, plain style with short sentences. No jargon, no exclamation marks. End every draft with one clear next step. If you need a fact I haven't given you, ask instead of guessing." | Two or three of your own past emails or posts |
| Study helper | "Explain concepts using only the uploaded notes. Quote the note title you used. If the notes don't cover it, say so. End with three practice questions." | Your lecture notes or chapter summaries |
| Weekly report | "Turn the raw updates I paste into a report: three headline results, two risks, one decision needed. Use the same headings every time." | One example report you were happy with |
Specific rules beat general ones. "Be professional" gives Claude almost nothing to act on, while "no jargon, one next step at the end" does.
Does a project save usage?
Not directly. Anthropic says projects draw from your plan's usage like any other use of Claude. What they do save is repetition: you don't paste the same background into every new chat.
Anthropic's usage limit best practices article, which I read on October 9, says project content is cached and counts less when reused, and that caches expire after a period of inactivity. So a project is a good home for files you use repeatedly, but one very long chat inside it will still use more than a fresh one. For how limits work, see Claude Free Plan Limits and Claude usage limit reached.
Project, normal chat, or something else?
| Situation | Use |
|---|---|
| One-off question, no background needed | A normal chat |
| Same files or rules reused across many chats | A project |
| Rules you want everywhere, not only one job | User preferences (listed under that name on Anthropic's pricing page, including for Free) |
| Working with other people on shared context | Team or Enterprise projects, the only plans where Anthropic says sharing is available |
| You run out of project slots (5 on Free) | Archive or delete old ones, or combine related jobs into one project |
If a paid plan is on your mind for projects alone, the differences are retrieval mode and sharing. See Claude Free vs Pro for the full price and limit comparison.
Manage, archive and delete
- Star a project from the three-dot menu or the star icon, so it appears in the left panel.
- Archive from the three-dot menu. Archived projects sit at the bottom of the list and their conversations stay accessible.
- Delete from the three-dot menu. Anthropic says archived projects can't be deleted, so unarchive first.
Anthropic's article doesn't describe renaming a project or editing instructions in the text I read, so check the project page in your account.
Questions people ask
Are Claude Projects free?
Yes. Anthropic says projects are available to all users, including free accounts, with up to five projects on a free account.
How many files can I upload to a Claude project?
Anthropic's help articles don't state a file count or size limit for projects. On paid plans, retrieval mode can expand project capacity up to 10x once knowledge nears the context limit. Check your project page for the live capacity.
Do Claude Projects use up my usage limit?
Yes. Anthropic says projects draw from your plan's usage like any other use of Claude. Cached project content counts less when reused, according to its usage best-practices article.
Does Claude remember other chats inside a project?
Not automatically. Anthropic says context isn't shared across chats in a project unless it's added to the project knowledge.
Can I share a project with someone else?
Only on Team and Enterprise plans, according to Anthropic's help article.
