Claude Free Plan Limits (2026): What's Official vs Guessed
Short answer: Claude's free plan doesn't have a fixed message count, and Anthropic doesn't publish one. What it does say is that your usage resets on a rolling five-hour window and depends on how long and heavy your chats are. So when a blog tells you "you get 30 messages a day," that's somebody's guess, not Anthropic's number. To see where you stand, open Settings > Usage.
What Anthropic actually says
I went through Anthropic's pricing page and its support article on usage limits on October 8, 2026, and re-checked both on October 12, 2026. This is everything they state about the free plan, and where it comes from.
| Question | What they say | Where |
|---|---|---|
| How many messages on Free? | No fixed count is published. Free is described as covering "everyday questions". | Pricing page |
| When does it reset? | On a rolling five-hour session window. | Pricing page |
| Is there a weekly limit? | Paid plans add weekly limits. The page doesn't mention one for Free. | Pricing page |
| Is usage shared between apps? | Yes. Anthropic says usage across claude.ai, Claude Desktop and Claude Code counts towards the same limit. Claude Code itself is listed as not included on Free. | Support article, pricing page |
| What makes it run out faster? | The length and complexity of your conversations, plus the features and model you use. | Support article |
| What happens when I hit it? | You wait for the reset or upgrade. Paid plans can also buy usage credits. | Support article, pricing page |
| Where can I check? | Settings > Usage. | Pricing page |
| Which models are included? | Sonnet and Haiku. Opus and Fable are not on Free. The pricing page does not name the version per plan, although it lists Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5, Haiku 5.5 and Fable 5.1 as current models. | Pricing page |
The sources are the Claude pricing page and Anthropic's article on how usage and length limits work.
What's included on Free, from the pricing page
| Feature | Free | Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Chat on web, desktop and mobile | Yes | Yes |
| Web search, file creation, code execution | Yes | Yes |
| Memory across conversations, connected apps | Yes | Yes |
| Artifacts | Yes | Yes |
| Claude Design, Slides, Docs | Yes | Yes |
| Projects | Up to 5 (how to use them) | Yes, no count given |
| Research | No | Yes |
| Claude Code | No | Yes |
Some third-party guides list Design as paid-only. Anthropic's pricing page lists Design, Slides and Docs on Free as of October 12, 2026, so I follow that.
The numbers you'll see online
Search for this and you'll find posts saying things like "15 to 40 messages every five hours" or "30 to 100 a day." I wouldn't lean on any of them, for three reasons.
- Anthropic doesn't publish a message count, so nobody outside the company can state one as fact.
- Usage depends on how much text Claude reads and writes, not on how many messages you send. A one-line question and a 40-page PDF are very different "messages."
- The posts contradict each other, and most don't say how they tested.
Two things I couldn't find anywhere official: a weekly limit for free users, and the size of the free context window. If a site gives you a firm number for either without linking to Anthropic, be skeptical.
What eats your free usage
Anthropic's own wording is that usage depends on conversation length and complexity. In practice, these are the big ones:
- Long chats. Anthropic says longer conversations that trigger automatic context management use more of your limit.
- Big uploads. A large document means a lot of text for Claude to read every time you reply.
- Tools and connected apps. The support article calls these token-intensive.
- Extended thinking and higher effort settings, where you have them, use more than a quick reply does.
How to make the free plan last
Most of this comes straight from Anthropic's own tips:
- Start a new chat for each task. Don't keep one endless conversation going.
- Keep Project instructions short, and remove files you no longer need.
- Turn off web search and connected apps when you're not using them.
- Turn off extended thinking for simple questions.
- Put the whole request in your first message. One clear ask beats five rounds of back and forth.
- Check Settings > Usage before a big task, so you know whether to start now or wait for the window to reset.
Is free enough for you?
This is my read based on how the limits work, not an official recommendation.
| If you mostly... | Free is probably... | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Ask a few questions, draft short emails | Plenty | Short chats barely dent the window. |
| Summarize a document or two a day | Fine | Just keep each one in its own chat. |
| Work in long back-and-forth sessions | Tight | Long threads use more of your limit. |
| Upload big files again and again | Tight | Every big upload adds a lot of text. |
| Need the Opus models | Not enough | Opus and Fable aren't on the free plan. |
My rule of thumb: stay on Free until hitting the limit actually gets in your way. If that's happening every week, try a paid plan for a month and see whether it changes anything.
Free, Pro and Max side by side
| Plan | Price | Usage |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | No fixed message count, five-hour session window. Sonnet and Haiku. |
| Pro | $17 a month billed annually ($200 up front), or $20 billed monthly | At least 5x Free per five-hour session, plus weekly limits. Adds Opus. |
| Max | From $100 a month, billed monthly | 5x or 20x Pro per five-hour session |
Checked against the official pricing page on October 8 and again on October 12, 2026. Plans change, so confirm before you pay.
