ChatGPT Free Plan Limits (2026): What Is Actually Capped
Short answer: On OpenAI's own pages, the free ChatGPT plan has unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse guardrails. What is capped is everything around the chat: file uploads, image creation, voice, deep research, memory and context size, Codex and ChatGPT Work. The old "10 messages every 5 hours" figure that many blogs repeat is not on OpenAI's current pages. Below: what is unlimited, what is limited, how to check, and how the free plan compares with Claude and Gemini.
Unlimited vs limited on the free plan
OpenAI's Free Tier FAQ says free users have "unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards," and that file uploads, image generation, voice, data analysis and other tools have separate usage limits. The pricing page lists the same split. Checked on October 12, 2026.
| Feature on Free | What OpenAI says |
|---|---|
| Everyday text chats | Unlimited, subject to abuse guardrails |
| Messages with uploads | Limited |
| Image creation | Limited |
| Voice chats | Limited |
| Deep research | Limited |
| Memory and context | Limited |
| Codex | Limited |
| ChatGPT Work | Limited, desktop app only |
| Library storage | 500 MB (help page) |
| Creating new GPTs | Not available on personal accounts, including Free |
| Ads | May appear in certain countries |
The help page also says GPT access follows your current Free-tier model limit and pauses until the limit resets, with reset timing shown in the product. It gives no numbers for any "limited" row.
Context window by plan
This is the one place OpenAI does give numbers. They affect how long a document or chat Free can handle, which is often what people hit first.
| Free | Go | Plus | Pro | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Instant model, total context | 27K | 54K | 54K | 128K |
| Instant model, input maximum | ~12 pages | ~40 pages | ~40 pages | ~250 pages |
| Reasoning model, total context | Varies | 256K | 256K | 400K |
Source: the "Compare features across plans" table on chatgpt.com/pricing. OpenAI notes that user input space is smaller than the total window, because instructions, memory and reasoning use part of it.
The "10 messages per 5 hours" figure
Many guides still say free ChatGPT allows about 10 messages per 5-hour window. Those numbers describe an older setup:
- Engadget reported in August 2026 that free accounts were getting unlimited text chats from the week of August 10, replacing a rolling five-hour window that had been dropped around July.
- OpenAI's current help page has no per-5-hour message count, and no weekly number either.
I'd treat any exact free-plan message count as unverified. Model names have also changed several times: the help page names GPT-5.6 Luna for Free users, while the pricing page headline now says "Unlimited text chats with GPT-6." Check the model picker in your account for what you actually have.
How to check your own usage
- Open ChatGPT and look in Settings for a Usage section. Engadget's August 2026 coverage describes this path; OpenAI's help page doesn't name the menu, so the label may differ in your app.
- When a limit is reached, ChatGPT notifies you, per OpenAI's help page, and shows the reset time in the product.
- Image, upload and voice limits are tracked separately from chat, so a blocked image doesn't mean chat is blocked.
Free vs Go vs Plus vs Pro
Prices below are what OpenAI's pricing page showed on October 12, 2026, in Indian rupees for an India-based visit. US dollar prices differ, so check your own region.
| Plan | Price (India view) | What changes from Free |
|---|---|---|
| Free | ₹0 | Unlimited everyday text chats, limited tools |
| Go | ₹399 / month | More messages with tools, more uploads, images and voice, longer memory. May include ads. |
| Plus | ₹1,999 / month | Advanced reasoning models, expanded deep research, Projects, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs, expanded Codex |
| Pro | From ₹10,699 / month | Three usage tiers, maximum deep research and memory, longer Codex and Work sessions |
OpenAI says that if you hit a rate limit on Free, your usage resets when you upgrade to Plus, Pro or Business.
ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini free plans
These plans limit different things, so "unlimited" doesn't mean the same across them. Each row comes from that company's own page, as I read them for the linked guides.
| ChatGPT Free | Claude Free | Gemini (no plan) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chat limit style | Everyday text unlimited, guardrails apply | Usage-based, rolling five-hour session window | "Standard limits," refresh every 5 hours up to a weekly limit |
| Tools | Separate limits for uploads, images, voice, research | Draws from the same usage allowance | Heavier features use more of the allowance |
| Exact numbers | Context windows only | No fixed message count | Multipliers only (2x / 4x on paid) |
| Details | This guide | Claude Free Plan Limits | Gemini Free vs Pro |
If you run into a wall on either of those, see Claude usage limit reached and Gemini usage limit reached. For Claude's paid plan, Claude Free vs Pro has the comparison.
What OpenAI doesn't publish
- Any number for image generations, file uploads, voice minutes, deep research runs or Codex use on Free.
- How "abuse guardrails" are triggered for unlimited text chats.
- A weekly cap, if one exists. One outlet reported a single weekly limit, but OpenAI's help page doesn't state it.
- Which model Free users get, in one place that agrees across pages.
OpenAI's help page also says the default model and available limits can change over time.
