Gemini Free vs Pro (2026): Limits, Prices, India & US

Short answer: stay on Gemini's free plan if you use it for everyday questions, writing and study help. Google AI Plus (2x the free usage) is the cheap first step if you keep hitting the limit: $4.99 a month in the US, ₹399 in India. Google AI Pro (4x usage and a 1 million token context window) costs $19.99 or ₹1,950. I checked every price and limit below against Google's own pages on October 9, 2026, and re-checked the India plan page and the limits help page on October 12, 2026.

Update, October 12, 2026: Google's India plan page now lists only Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite under Free, 3.6 Flash and 3.1 Pro under AI Plus, and 3.8 Flash and 3.1 Pro under AI Pro. The limits help page, however, still marks Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro as "Yes" for accounts with no plan. The two pages don't fully agree, so treat model names as something that changes often and check what your own account shows.

Google AI Ultra sits above all of these: from $99.99 a month in the US (5x Pro usage) and from ₹6,500 in India. It's aimed at heavy professional use, so I've left it out of the comparison.

What "2x" and "4x" really mean

Google doesn't publish a message count for any plan. The free plan has "standard limits", and the paid plans are described as a multiple of that. Google's help page says your limit "refreshes every 5 hours until you reach your weekly limit", and that limits "may change without notice". Google's plan page also says you can extend your limits by purchasing AI credits.

Two things follow from that. First, "4x" is four times an unpublished number, so it tells you the ratio, not how many prompts you get. Second, the size of a limit depends on what you ask for: Google says Deep Research and extended thinking use more of your allowance than a plain chat. If you see a site claiming "Gemini free gives you exactly 20 prompts a day", ask where Google said that. I take the same approach in my post on what's official and what's guessed about Claude's free limits.

Cost per "x": which paid plan is the better deal

This is simple arithmetic on Google's own multipliers, not a measure of real value. Divide each plan's price by its usage multiplier and you get what each extra "x" of usage costs.

PlanUsage vs FreeUS price per "x"India price per "x"
AI Plus2xabout $2.50about ₹200
AI Pro4xabout $5.00about ₹488

If all you want is more usage, Plus is about half the price per unit in the US and well under half in India. Pro earns its price when you need what Plus doesn't have: the 1 million token context window (for long PDFs, books and big batches of notes), 5 TB of storage, and the higher Deep Research and tool limits. If none of those matter to you, Plus is the better buy.

Who should pay for what

This table is my judgment based on how the plans work, not Google's recommendation.

Students: the free year

If you're an eligible college student, check this before paying anything. Google's India announcement offers one year of Google AI Plus at no cost, redeemable until December 31, 2026. Google says it's open in more than 140 markets, but not the US, Canada, Hong Kong, Macau, Bolivia, Albania or Tunisia. A valid form of payment is required at sign-up, and Google AI Plus then charges $4.99 a month (or the local equivalent) when the year ends, so set a reminder to cancel if you don't want to continue.

The US Gemini page shows a banner saying college students get a free Pro plan for one year. I couldn't find the terms for that offer, so check them on the page before relying on it. Google also lists a Google AI Pro plus YouTube Premium student bundle at up to 70% off in some markets, with SheerID verification. Check the terms for your country on Google's student offer post.

How to check your own limits

Most comparisons stop at "check Google's help page". Here's how to see where you stand, for free.

  1. Open Gemini at gemini.google.com and sign in with your Google account.
  2. Look for your usage information in the app's settings, or in Google's limits help page. Menu names change, so I haven't listed an exact path.
  3. Note it a few times a day for a week, and write down what you were doing when you got close.
  4. Fix the cheap causes first. Start a new chat for each task, and save Deep Research and extended thinking for jobs that need them. The same habits stretch other chatbots too; I list them in how to make Claude's free plan last.
  5. Only then decide. If you still run out weekly, try Plus before Pro.

What Google doesn't publish

Things I looked for on the official pages and couldn't find:

  • A number of prompts per day or per five-hour window for any plan.
  • The size of the weekly limit.
  • How much faster Deep Research or extended thinking uses up your allowance.
  • Why the India plan page lists only 3.5 Flash-Lite for Free while the limits help page marks Flash and Pro as available with no plan.

Treat any firm number for these as a guess unless it links to Google. For how Claude's plans compare, see Claude Free vs Pro. For the same official-versus-guessed breakdown on ChatGPT, see ChatGPT free plan limits.

Questions people ask

Is Gemini free to use?

Yes. The free plan costs $0 (₹0 in India) with a Google account and includes access to Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite according to Google's India plan page (the limits help page also lists Flash and Pro as available without a plan). It has standard usage limits that refresh every five hours.

How much does Google AI Pro cost?

$19.99 a month in the US and ₹1,950 a month in India, according to Google's plan pages. It gives 4x the free usage and a 1 million token context window.

Is Google AI Plus worth it?

If you hit the free limit often and don't need a long context window, yes: it's 2x the free usage for $4.99 a month in the US or ₹399 in India. If you work with very long documents, Pro is the plan that gets you past 128k tokens.

Can students get Gemini paid plans for free?

Eligible college students can get one year of Google AI Plus free in India and other eligible markets (140-plus in all, not including the US) until December 31, 2026. A payment method is required at sign-up, and the plan renews at the paid price unless you cancel.
