Google AI Plus Free for Students (India): How to Claim
Short answer: Google is offering eligible college students in India one year of Google AI Plus free, and you can redeem it until December 31, 2026. You claim it from Google's student offer page, you need a valid payment method at sign-up, and it renews at the normal price unless you cancel. Below: who qualifies, the claim steps, what it costs afterwards, and how to avoid a surprise charge.

Who qualifies
Google's post targets "college students in India" and extends the offer to students in more than 140 markets where Google AI Plus is available, except the countries listed above. It doesn't give a detailed eligibility checklist in the text I could read. One news report describes the requirement as being "currently enrolled in a degree- or certificate-granting, accredited educational institution," but that comes from a news site, not from Google.
A separate bundle of Google AI Pro and YouTube Premium is available to students at up to 70% off. Google says it needs SheerID verification and isn't available on school-issued accounts. That is a different offer from the free AI Plus year.
How to claim it
- Sign in to the Google account you want the plan on. Use your personal account, not a school-issued one. Google says the Pro and YouTube bundle isn't available on school-issued accounts, and the safe choice is the same for this offer.
- Open the student offer page. The "Claim your offer" button in Google's post links to
one.google.com/ai-student. - Choose the free AI Plus plan. The page may also show discounted AI Pro options, so check you're selecting the free one.
- Verify your student status when asked, using the details the sign-up flow requests.
- Add a payment method. Google requires one at sign-up. A news report says a small authorisation of Rs 2 may be charged and refunded. Treat that as unconfirmed.
- Check Gemini. Open gemini.google.com and look at the plan shown in your account to confirm it upgraded.
Steps 3 to 5 follow the flow described by Google's post and a news report, and Google may change the screens. Follow what your own screen asks for.
What happens after the free year
Google's post says AI Plus automatically charges $4.99/month, or the local currency equivalent, once the offer ends unless you cancel. In India, Google's subscriptions page listed AI Plus at ₹399 a month when I rechecked it on October 12, 2026 (details in Gemini Free vs Pro). Prices can change, so confirm what your own account shows.
The practical consequence: a "free" year still has a renewal date. If you don't want to pay, set a reminder now.
How to cancel before you're charged
Google's help center page covers cancelling Google One memberships. It doesn't mention Google AI plans by name, so these steps may differ for your account.
| Where you subscribed | Steps from Google's help page |
|---|---|
| Android app | Open the Google One app, tap Menu > Settings > Cancel membership, then confirm. |
| Computer | Go to myaccount.google.com/deleteservices, sign in, select Google One, then "Cancel and delete your current plan." |
| iPhone via App Store | App Store > your name > Subscriptions > Google One > Cancel Subscription. |
According to the same page, benefits and storage last until the end of the billing cycle, and everyone drops back to the default free storage of up to 15 GB. If your Gmail, Drive and Photos use is above that, Google says Gmail stops sending and receiving, Drive stops syncing and Photos stops backing up. Free up space or back things up before the plan ends.
Is it worth claiming?
This is my read, not Google's advice.
| Your situation | Suggestion |
|---|---|
| You use Gemini often and hit limits | Claim it. 2x limits is real value for free. See what 2x means in practice. |
| You need extra storage | Claim it. 400 GB is the other main benefit. |
| You rarely use Gemini | The free plan may be enough. A renewal date is a cost of claiming. |
| You mostly use Claude or ChatGPT | Compare first. See Claude Free vs Pro and Claude's free plan limits. |
If you do hit the Gemini wall on a paid plan, see Gemini usage limit reached: what it means and how to fix it.
What Google doesn't say
- Which student ID documents are accepted, in the text I could read.
- What to do if verification fails.
- Whether the offer has a cap on total sign-ups.
- Cancellation steps written specifically for the student AI Plus offer.
Several news sites repeat the offer, with differing details on price and eligibility. Where they differ from Google's own post, this guide follows Google.
Questions people ask
Is Google AI Plus really free for students in India?

What is the last date to claim?
December 31, 2026, according to Google's post.
Do I need a credit card?
Google says a valid payment method is required at sign-up. It doesn't specify card types in the text I could read.
