NotebookLM Limits (Now Gemini Notebook): Free vs Paid
Short answer: NotebookLM is now called Gemini Notebook in Google's help pages. The free plan allows up to 100 notebooks and 50 sources per notebook, with each source up to 500,000 words or 200MB. Everything else (chat, Audio Overviews, reports) now runs on a usage budget that refreshes every 5 hours until a weekly limit. Google doesn't publish daily counts, so older "50 chats a day" figures are no longer official.
Notebook and source limits by plan
These are fixed caps, not a usage budget. They come from Google's plan comparison page, checked on October 11, 2026. Google labels them "subject to change."
| Plan | Notebooks per user | Sources per notebook |
|---|---|---|
| No plan (Standard) | 100 | 50 |
| Google AI Plus | 200 | 100 |
| Google AI Pro | 500 | 300 |
| Google AI Ultra (20 TB) | 500 | 500 |
| Google AI Ultra (30 TB) | 500 | 600 |
Per-source limits are in Google's add sources help page:
- Each source can contain up to 500,000 words, or up to 200MB for uploaded files.
- Google Slides: up to 100 slides.
- Google Sheets: limited to 100k tokens "at this time."
- Supported types include PDF, docx, txt, md, csv, pptx, images, audio (MP3, WAV), Google Docs, Slides and Sheets, ePub, web URLs, public YouTube URLs, copied text and notes.
Deep Research has its own catch: Google says source limits apply, and results "may be partially imported if usage limits are exceeded."
Usage limits: the 5-hour and weekly budget
Google's usage limits page says limits are compute-based. They account for the complexity of your prompt, the models and features you use, the length of your chat and specific features. The quota "refreshes every 5 hours until you reach your weekly limit."
| Plan | Usage compared with Standard |
|---|---|
| No plan | "Standard limits" |
| AI Plus | Two times higher |
| AI Pro | Four times higher |
| AI Ultra | 5x or 20x higher than AI Pro, depending on subscription |
This is the same system and the same multipliers as the main Gemini app. I explain what "2x" and "4x" cost in rupees and dollars in Gemini Free vs Pro, and the blocked-moment steps in Gemini usage limit reached.
The old daily numbers you'll still see
Many blogs still list a free plan of 50 chat queries and 3 Audio Overviews per day. Those figures do not appear on Google's current usage page, which gives no per-feature counts at all. Some third-party posts date the switch to compute-based limits to early September 2026 and some are internally inconsistent, so I'm not treating any of them as current.
One wrinkle: the plan comparison page still says "If your plan is on daily quotas, these reset after 24 hours. Monthly quotas reset after 30 days." That wording sits alongside the 5-hour description on the other page, and Google doesn't explain which features still use daily or monthly quotas. Treat any specific per-day number as unconfirmed until your own Usage screen shows it.
How to check your usage
- Open Gemini Notebook and select Settings at the top right, then Usage.
- In chat, look at the message at the bottom. Google's example reads "Limit reached. All features are available after 3:00 PM."
- When generating in the Studio panel, a bar at the bottom shows the expected usage cost. A fuller bar means a higher cost.
The studio bar is the useful one: check it before you start a big Audio Overview or report.
What to do when you hit the limit
- Wait for the refresh time shown. It's in the message.
- Use "Generate later" in the Studio panel. Google says you can delay generations, it may take a couple of hours, and you get a notification if notifications are on. It is currently web only.
- Upgrade from chat or Studio by selecting Upgrade, if the blocks are frequent.
Ways to use less, which are my suggestions based on Google's list of what counts, not Google's advice:
| Habit | Try instead |
|---|---|
| Generating an overview to see if it's good | Check the Studio cost bar and your instructions first. Generate once. |
| One notebook with every document you own | One notebook per project, so each question has less to process. |
| Very long chat threads | Google lists chat length as a factor. Start a fresh chat for a new question. |
| Running Deep Research for simple lookups | Ask in chat first. Use Deep Research for a real brief. |
India, South Korea and Vietnam: the watermark note
Google's plan comparison lists "watermark removal" as No for Standard and Plus and Yes* for Pro and Ultra. The footnote says a visible watermark is applied automatically if you reside in India, South Korea or Vietnam. The FAQ on the same page says generated images and videos get a visible watermark (with invisible SynthID marks on outputs made with Veo, Omni or Nano Banana), and that eligible AI Pro and Ultra subscribers can control it with a "Visible watermarking" toggle under their profile picture. Read together, a Pro or Ultra plan does not appear to remove the visible watermark if you live in India, South Korea or Vietnam. That is my reading of the two statements, so check before buying for that reason.
Which plan fits you
This is my read, not Google's advice.
| Your situation | Suggestion |
|---|---|
| A few notebooks, under 50 sources, occasional overviews | Stay on the free plan. |
| You hit the 50-source cap on a project | Try merging related documents first. Plus raises it to 100. |
| Thesis or large research project with hundreds of sources | Pro (300 sources) or higher is the only way to fit one notebook. |
| An Indian student on the free AI Plus year | You get 2x usage and 100 sources. See how to claim it. |
Questions people ask
Is NotebookLM the same as Gemini Notebook?
Google's help pages now use the name Gemini Notebook for the product that was NotebookLM. News reports date the rebrand to July 2026 and describe it as a name change, not a different tool.
How many sources can I add on the free plan?
Up to 50 sources per notebook and 100 notebooks per user, according to Google's help pages. Each source can be up to 500,000 words or 200MB.
How many chats or Audio Overviews do I get per day?
Google doesn't publish a number any more. Usage is a compute-based budget that refreshes every 5 hours up to a weekly limit. Older "50 chats, 3 audio overviews per day" figures aren't on the current page.
When does my limit reset?
Google says the quota refreshes every 5 hours until you reach your weekly limit. The chat message shows the exact time your features return.
Does Google AI Pro remove the limits?
No. It raises them: usage is four times Standard on Pro, and sources per notebook go from 50 to 300. Google also says limits may change.
